Universally hailed as “One of the best pianists of Russian romantic traditions” (Figaro, France), Yakov Birman graduated from the St. Petersburg Conservatory with the highest academic honors of Doctor of Musical Arts Degree and the Performing Arts Diploma.
Born in Odessa, a city of great musical traditions, Yakov made his orchestral debut at age 13 performing the Saint-Saens' Second Piano Concerto with the State Philharmonic. Invitations from the USSR and European orchestras followed immediately, and since, Yakov Birman performed with the leading orchestras in numerous world capitals to the enthusiastic acclaim from both critics and the audiences. Maestro Birman is also a noted chamber musician performing most recently at the New York’s Carnegie Hall.
As a piano Professor, Dr. Birman has taught master classes in virtually all European countries, including, most recently Russia, Finland, Netherlands, Czech Republic as well as the United States. Many of his students have won top prices at international piano competitions.

Among his most recent recordings, Maestro Birman produced a CD of Baroque music with a group of Los Angeles musicians which received enthusiastic praise from such notable musicians as Gary Graffman and Valeri Gergiev.
Yakov Birman has an immense experience in music from the Baroque era to the contemporary works. His repertoire ranges from Bach, Mozart, Beethoven, Chopin to Prokofiev and Schoenberg.
